The Phoenix Plan by Terri Selting David Book 1
This is a fun spy spoof. It could be the basis for an animated spy kids-type movie.
Sarah and Simon are seventeen-year-old twins, though Sarah likes to remind her brother that she is nine minutes older. They do not know who their parents are but were raised on a tropical island by a secret organization called DAAAD.
As they grew up, they received highly specialized training in spycraft. What they know and can do is amazing. They were provided well-balanced meals (although Simon longed for a simple taco), their laundry was done, and their beds were made—all as if they were living at a luxurious resort. Their time was dedicated to learning and practicing their skills. All they know of life in the outside world is what they see on TV or in the movies.
Then they receive their first assignment. Simon is excited, but Sarah is disappointed. She yearns for action, yet this seems dull and routine. There are no villains to confront. They merely need to uncover the truth behind a shadowy figure to dispel the social media rumours that conspiracy theorists enjoy speculating about. That’s it. Most likely, there’s some ordinary explanation.
DAAAD arranges a lovely suburban home for them to live in during their undercover assignment. That’s when the flaw in DAAAD’s training becomes apparent with a vengeance. Two teenagers, alone in a house with no idea how to cook, do laundry, wash dishes, or even grocery shop. But it can’t be that difficult, can it? Sarah and Simon realize that taking care of oneself in everyday life can be more complicated than it looks on TV.
Moreover, the mission becomes increasingly complicated — and deadly. Will they even make it back alive?
Note: There is a smattering of unnecessary - are they ever necessary? - potty words in the story.
