The Facility is an interesting teenage dystopian story. Although we occasionally see things from a different character’s perspective, the main character is Anya. She lived in one of the outlying towns until the rebels killed her parents. She is then rescued and brought to the domed city of Presidium, protected from the rebels by electric shields and powerful guns.
Life inside Presidium is well structured and ordered. As an orphan, Anya is taken into the Arcis program, which consists of two towers with nine floors each. Each floor is different, and a series of tests must be successfully completed to reach the ninth floor and graduate, although no one knows precisely what that means. Eighteen teenagers begin the program. As they work on the first floor, they live in the surrounding area, Essention, but when they progress to the second floor onward, they live in the towers. Some floors require them to cooperate; on other floors, they are in competition.
Anya begins to doubt what she has been told. Was it really the rebels who killed her parents, or was it soldiers from Presidium? What is the purpose of all these tests? Are they just being analyzed, and if so, for what purpose? Are there disguised rebels in the program?
The questions and challenges keep coming as Anya makes friends and enemies on her journey to the mysterious ninth floor. Eliza Green ends this first book in The Resistance Files series in a suspenseful way. Readers will want to get the next book to see what happens to Anya.
The Facility is a well-written story but contains a smattering of potty words and takes the name of the Lord in vain once. On one of the floors, the girls are pressured into having sex with the boys to progress to the next floor quickly. It is implied that some do, although not Anya. There is also an attempted rape and descriptive kissing, but no explicit sex scenes.
